DECK JACKET - “DECK HOOK JACKET” TYPE - COAST GUARD

Designed in 1943 and put into service in 1944, the Deck Hook jacket was the direct ancestor of the famous N-1 model, replacing the previous version known as the "Deck Zip." The main change concerned the closure system: the zipper was abandoned in favor of metal hooks, an innovative solution that offered better resistance to corrosion caused by salt water, while also making it easier to use, even with gloves. This improvement quickly made the jacket an iconic piece of US Navy equipment during World War II. Before and during World War II, the United States Navy experimented with several types of jackets adapted to the extreme weather conditions at sea. Early versions with zippers were very popular with sailors, but their limitations quickly became apparent: the metal zippers tended to jam in freezing weather and rusted rapidly in the sea air. To overcome these drawbacks, military designers drew inspiration from firefighters' coats, which used a system of sturdy hooks that were easy to operate, even with bulky equipment. Several variations of the M-43 model existed, depending on the manufacturing contracts. The interpretation offered here by REDSTONE AND CO and PIKE BROTHERS features bellows pockets with "D" shapes and a single hook closure at the hem. Some other versions incorporated a double closure at the hem. The jacket combined a jungle cloth outer fabric, a wool lining, and a rayon mid-layer, providing excellent thermal insulation. In 1945, the M-43 jacket was replaced by the N-1 model, marking the end of a short but intense production cycle. Today, due to its rarity and historical significance, the M-43 has become one of the most sought-after military garments on the vintage market.
