THE MOTTO OF THE US NAVY
The United States Navy (or US Navy) is the maritime branch of the United States Armed Forces, specifically created on October 13, 1775.
Its motto, "Honor, Courage, Commitment", reflects the core values that guide its members.
Honor:
Honor is one of these core values. As a member of the U.S. Navy, honor means taking responsibility for one's conduct, both professionally and personally. This includes adhering to an uncompromising code of integrity, taking full responsibility for one's actions, and keeping one's word. Members of the U.S. Navy are committed to ethical conduct and integration in their relationships with superiors, peers, and subordinates. Honesty and truthfulness are fundamental principles, both in interactions within the Navy and outside the Department of the Navy. This also includes the responsibility to provide honest recommendations to superiors and peers, as well as seeking honest recommendations from subordinates. Finally, respecting legal and ethical responsibilities in public and personal life is a critical component of honor in the U.S. Navy.
Courage:
This is another core value of the US Navy that motivates its members to act with moral and mental strength to do what is right, with confidence and determination, even in the face of temptation or adversity. This manifests itself in several ways:
Having the courage to meet the demands of one's profession.
To make decisions and act in the best interests of the Ministry of the Navy and the nation, without regard for personal consequences.
Overcoming all challenges while adhering to the highest standards of personal conduct and decency.
To be loyal to the nation by ensuring that the resources entrusted to it are used honestly, prudently, and efficiently.
The commitment:
is also a core value that guides U.S. Navy members in their daily duty. It fosters teamwork and the continuous improvement of the quality of work, employees, and oneself. Aspects of this commitment include:
Promote respect from top to bottom of the chain of command.
To take care of the personal and spiritual well-being of one's staff.
Show respect to every individual, regardless of their race, religion, or gender.
To continually strive to bring about positive change and to improve oneself personally.
To demonstrate the highest degree of moral character, professional excellence, quality and competence in all actions undertaken.
These fundamental values of honor, courage, and commitment are at the heart of the US Navy's culture and guide the behavior of its members in service to their country.
