2. THE STORY OF OUR JACKETS +
Introduced in 1943, the B-10 jacket marked a significant milestone in the history of American aviation gear. It was the first fabric flight jacket adopted by the US Army Air Force, breaking with the tradition of sheepskin jackets that had dominated until then—notably the famous B-3 and ANJ-4. These earlier models, while very warm, were heavy, stiff, and impractical, especially in the cramped cockpits of increasingly modern fighter aircraft. The B-10 introduced a new philosophy: to offer equivalent thermal protection while significantly reducing bulk and improving mobility. Featuring a durable cotton twill outer shell and an alpaca and sheep's wool lining, the B-10 combined warmth, lightness, and flexibility. Its sheepskin collar, knitted cuffs and hem, and tailored fit make it a jacket that is as functional as it is comfortable—particularly suited to the needs of bomber and fighter pilots of the time. It was quickly appreciated for its technical qualities and served as the basis for the development of later models like the B-15, which further refined the concept. The B-10 is much more than a flight jacket: it is a symbol of the transition to more modern, ergonomic equipment better suited to the evolving nature of aerial combat. Today, it remains a must-have for enthusiasts of military history and vintage aviation clothing. Expanded Historical Context: The B-10 jacket was adopted by the US Army Air Forces (USAAF) in July 1943, in response to the need to modernize flight clothing, especially for fighter and bomber crews operating at medium altitudes. It arrived at a pivotal moment in the war, when mobility, comfort, and rapid production became strategic priorities. Leather and sheepskin, more expensive and less readily available, were gradually replaced by textile materials. Production and Manufacturers: The B-10 was produced for only a very short period (1943-1944), making it a relatively rare model. Several American military manufacturers produced it, including Rough Wear Clothing Co., Aero Leather, New York Coat Co., Superior Togs, and AC Order, each with slight variations (fur type, fabric color, markings). The outer fabric was generally dull olive-colored cotton twill (OD 41). Visual and Functional Features: The sheepskin collar (often dyed brown or caramel) was both a functional and visually distinctive feature. On later or late-war versions, it was sometimes replaced with synthetic fur, particularly due to shortages.
