2. THE STORY OF OUR JACKETS +
Before World War II, the U.S. Navy introduced the 37-J-1 flight jacket , a lightweight garment designed for the specific needs of naval aviation. Made of "jungle cloth ," a dense and durable cotton canvas, it offered pilots protection, comfort, and a wide range of movement in flight. Unlike heavier leather jackets, the 37-J-1 was distinguished by its breathability and lightness , ideal qualities for hot climates and non-combat missions .
Today, original models are extremely rare – collector's items that truly make flight jacket enthusiasts dream.
We were fortunate enough to closely examine an exceptional period example. Our faithful reproduction of the 37-J-1 accurately captures the specific features of this iconic piece. It is aimed at both enthusiasts of authentic vintage items and discerning collectors.
USN 37-J-1 – A pioneering naval aviation jacket
The 37-J-1 jacket is one of the first standard-issue models adopted by the US Navy for its aviators. Introduced in the late 1930s, it predates the famous G1-type leather jackets and marks an important step in the development of flight clothing for US naval aviation.
Designed for the specific conditions of missions at sea, the 37-J-1 stands out for its lightness, breathability, and robustness . Unlike its leather counterparts used by the US Army Air Corps, this jacket is made of "jungle cloth ," a thick, tightly woven cotton canvas that is resistant to wind and salt spray. This material offers an ideal balance between protection and thermal comfort , particularly suited to the hot Pacific climate or short flights.
Designed for Navy and Marine Corps pilots, the 37-J-1 jacket was primarily a functional and utilitarian garment. It featured minimal ornamentation, prioritizing operational efficiency . Its straight cut, simple collar, and zipper closure made it easy to wear both in the cockpit and on the deck of an aircraft carrier.
Produced until the early 1940s, the 37-J-1 was gradually replaced by the M-421A , then the G1 , which offered greater protection and featured a fur collar. Today, original examples are very rare and highly prized by collectors of military clothing.
USN M-421A – The logical evolution of naval flight clothing
Introduced in the early 1940s, the M-421A jacket succeeded the 37-J-1 as the standard-issue flight jacket for US Navy aviators . Designed during World War II, this jacket reflects the evolving operational needs of carrier-based aviation: greater comfort, improved protection from the elements, and enhanced functionality during flight.
Like the 37-J-1, the M-421A retained its "junglecloth" construction , a tightly woven cotton fabric resistant to wind and abrasion. However, it incorporated several significant improvements : a warmer lining , a more enveloping collar , and sometimes a closer fit to the body to reduce wind resistance in the open or semi-enclosed cockpits of aircraft of that era.
Worn primarily by fighter pilots, dive bombers, and carrier-based observers, the M-421A was perfectly suited to temperate to hot maritime climates. It foreshadowed the main stylistic features of the future G-1, but with a more stripped-down design , lacking a fur collar, and retaining a distinctly utilitarian character.
Today, the M-421A is a rare and sought-after item. Less well-known to the general public than the G-1, it is appealing due to its understated design, functional cut, and direct heritage from the Pacific War .
We offer you this reproduction of the US Navy 37J1 pilot jacket.
