USN 37-J-1 – A pioneering naval aviation jacket

The 37-J-1 jacket is one of the first standard-issue models adopted by the US Navy for its aviators. Introduced in the late 1930s, it predates the famous G1-type leather jackets and marks an important step in the development of flight clothing for US naval aviation.

Designed for the specific conditions of missions at sea, the 37-J-1 stands out for its lightness, breathability, and robustness . Unlike its leather counterparts used by the US Army Air Corps, this jacket is made of "jungle cloth ," a thick, tightly woven cotton canvas that is resistant to wind and salt spray. Like the 37-J-1, the M-421A retained its "junglecloth" construction , a tightly woven cotton fabric resistant to wind and abrasion.
