In the 1940s, the U.S. Navy designed a variety of jackets to withstand the harsh conditions of sea combat. The oceans, as formidable as enemy ships, presented sailors with extreme challenges. It was with this in mind that the U.S. Navy developed the N1 Deck Jacket, combining durability and functionality. While officers retained the prestigious pea coat, a symbol of their authority, the N1 offered all sailors considerable freedom of movement without sacrificing protection from the elements. This jacket undoubtedly served many sailors well for many years.

Originally, the N-1 was made of dark blue cotton with an alpaca fur-lined collar. The military made modifications, adding alpaca fur to the entire torso and a drawstring to protect against the wind while maintaining the sailors' mobility. Over time, further developments were suggested for the N-1, introducing new colors such as olive and khaki.
